The funding has been set up to help an increasingly worried number of countries from Europe being a quiet scheme to send troops to Ukraine. It is being done to support whatever peace may be negotiated with Russia.

Leading the efforts are Britain and France, but they have kept things very close to the vest. Those willing to participate do not want to let anyone know what they are planning. Nor what advantage it might offer President Putin if he should choose to end the fighting, which has already lasted three years.

That is, it is evident from the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy that soon after a long-lasting peace has been put into place, he would require assurance about his country’s security. While for long, NATO membership has plied hopes into Ukraine, as far as the U.S. is concerned, that hope has been orchestrated out of the possibility.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer commented, “I won’t discuss the specifics of our capabilities but yes, peace will have to come with some form of security guarantee for Ukraine, and that is what the U.K. will underpin.”

So, the Europeans began to mull over the necessary force around a year ago, but since then, the urgency has made quite a change. Especially given the growing worries that U.S. President Donald Trump might strike a deal with Putin, bypassing them and, potentially, Ukraine.

A meeting was held to bring world leaders and ministers together with Zelenskyy at the residence of NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in Brussels soon after the election of Trump in December.

Those attending included representatives from Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Poland, along with high-ranking European Union officials. These discussions took shape on an idea proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron early in the year 2024.
