Former rumors revealed that the iPhone SE’s fourth generation will launch in March 2025. Additionally, a recent leaked information unveiled that Apple soon introduce its own 5G and Wi-Fi modem.
It is not surprising that Apple plans to develop its own modem in a bid to Qualcomm chipset. In 2019, the company showed its reliable interest in building a modem by acquiring Intel’s modem division for $1 billion. However, the news of progress hadn’t been announced before.
According to Bloomberg, Mark Gurman’s report, the new chipset series will replace Qualcomm following more than five years of development. He added that the new 5G modem could take complete deployment until 2027 to match Qualcomm’s performance and features.
In addition to the details, he stated that Apple’s modem will be able to have 5G download speed up to 4 Gbps which is slower than Qualcomm’s modems in the high-end iPhones. Hence, it is quite faster than the real-world speed. Therefore, the first modem has a secret codename “Sinope”, “V59” or “Centauri,” which will not support the ultra-fast 5G standard known as mmwave. But it accommodates dual SIM functionality.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm modems have high-tech features, but Apple’s first modem will also have its good reasons. The new modem can be built with improved integrity, which will resolve the issue of excessive heat and more battery consumption. It becomes better for cellular network scanning and satellite connectivity enhancements.
Apple’s second-generation modem is expected to be available for iPhone 18 in 2026 and a third-generation modem in 2027. Even so, the latest iPhone 17 Air should be released in September 2025.
