A wave of discomfort is quite visible when an examination of the job market within the gaming industry is done for 2024. It indicates that the market faced a barrage of layoffs last year. Yet, this reflection is important to understand the current landscape and be ready and equipped for what lies ahead.
The 2025 State of the Game Industry report was recently published by the Game Developers Conference (GDC) drawing insights from a survey of over 3,000 developers. In the report, disheartening statistics come forward that one in every ten developers lost their jobs in the past year.
The major factors that led companies to reduce their team include a shift in market trends (15%), restructuring (22%) and declining revenue (18%). In addition to this, terms such as greed, pandemic/COVID, and over-hiring frequently came to the surface in the discussions.
Alarmingly, a significant 19% of respondents opted for the ‘no reason given ’ option as their explanation for the layoffs. A statement in the report goes like this, “In this industry, we set impossible goals and then fire everyone if they prove to be impossible. We need to apply lean and agile processes instead of shooting for the moon every single time.”
For individuals who have been impacted by the layoffs, the departments that are most affected include narrative (19%), visual arts (16%), production and team management (16%), game design (9%), programming/engineering (12%) along with business and finance (6%).
Looking forward, around 60% of respondents have expressed concerns about the potential layoffs in the future within their companies. The percentage of employees feeling secure dropped from 35% (last year) to 30%. Individuals interested in checking out the complete report could easily access it by visiting the official Game Developers Conference (GDC) website where the entire report is published in a detailed manner.
