Google announced the Android XR, an operating system designed for so-called “extended reality” devices like headsets and glasses.
Google stated in a blog post, “Today, we’re introducing Android XR, a new operating system built for this next generation of computing. Created in collaboration with Samsung, Android XR combines years of investment in AI, AR, and VR to bring helpful experiences to headsets and glasses.”
In collaboration with Samsung, Google unveiled that Android XR will first launch on headsets, code-named “Project Moohan.” The device, built by Samsung to transform your work lifestyle, will be available for purchase next year.
Additionally, Google intends to add YouTube and Google TVs for a virtual big-screen. Android XR will help the users fill the space of their room with digital apps such as Google Workspace, Google Maps, Google Photos, and Gemini, an AI assistant. It will influence how you “work, watch, and explore.”
Furthermore, the tech giant thinks differently to enhance users’ experience of using Android XR headsets. Google is rolling out “Circle to Search” to quickly search for things and information you are looking for via a big screen. You can access Chrome for multiple tasks and projects with an immersive view.
Alongside XR headsets, Google introduced cutting-edge smart glasses for everyday wear. The prototype glasses enable Gemini with just one touch and provide helpful information like directions, messages, translations, etc. without using mobile phones. You can hear all suggestions right in your ear or see straight with your eyesight.
However, Project Moohan running the Android XR operating system is believed to be the same as the Apple Vision Pro headset. The Meta Quest, Apple Vision Pro, and Google Android XR will likely have historic competition in 2025.
