After the massive ban in the US markets, Huawei unveiled the latest Mate 70 smartphone lineup. The Mate 70 is the first lineup running on the company’s operating system “HarmonyOS NEXT.” This indicates that Huawei cut off entirely from Google’s Android operating system.

Additionally, Huawei invested heavily in developing its operating system, HarmonyOS NEXT. The firm launched its operating system in 2019 as an alternative to Google’s Android. The Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro, Mate 70 Pro Plus, and Mate 70 RS will similarly support HarmonyOS NEXT operating system with limited apps.

However, Reuters said in a post, “Last week, Huawei said it had secured more than 15,000 applications for its HarmonyOS ecosystem, with plans to expand to 100,000 apps in the coming months.” Huawei also confirmed that beginning next year (2025), smartphones and tablets will only comply with the HarmonyOS NEXT.

Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei’s consumer business group, said at an event, “The Mate 70 series will offer users a choice between HarmonyOS 4.3, which maintains Android compatibility, and the new HarmonyOS NEXT 5.0.”

Furthermore, the Huawei Mate 70 model features a 6.7-inch display, 50 MP main camera, 12 MP telephoto periscope camera, and 40MP ultra wide-angle camera alongside the front-facing camera with a 13 MP ultra-wide selfie camera. It supports 66W fast charging with a USB-C cable and a 5,300mAh battery.

The analysts stated that Huawei intends to trail Apple in the competition with its own operating system after U.S. export restrictions are implemented. Therefore, Mate 70 prices will start at 5,499 yuan ($758).
