A new rumor revealed that the Apple iPhone 17 Air will launch next year. Alongside, the iPhone SE 4 with face ID with in-house developed first 5G modem.

“Apple’s in-house modem system will debut next spring, according to people familiar with the matter,” said Mark Gurman at Bloomberg.

The iPhone 17 Air might be the next slim smartphone, notably 2 millimeters (0.08 inches) thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro. It likely beat the Apple’s previous slimmest smartphone, the iPhone 6 (6.9 mm). Hence, the latest iPhone 17 Pro is predicted to have around 6.25 mm thickness.

Gurman added, “By using its own modem, Apple is able to create a smartphone that’s about 2 millimeters thinner than an iPhone 16 Pro, while still having room for the battery, display and camera system. Over time, the shift could allow for other new designs. That includes foldable devices—a concept Apple continues to explore.”

Apple uses its own modem, which helps to make adjustments for thinner designs. It will integrate with in-house components, acquire less space, and consume less battery power. However, in lab tests, Apple’s first modem would deliver a download speed of up to 4 gigabytes, which is slower than Qualcomm’s modem. Yet the real-world speed of both modems is far less and customers might not notice the difference.

As a result, it would not be placed in higher-end devices, but the iPhone SE 4 might get the first update with the modem. On the other hand, the iPhone 17 Air is estimated to have a single-lens rear camera and a 6.6-inch display in the premium pricing range.
